Voice of a Murderer – Korean Movie from 2007

Voice of a Murderer is an award-winning 2007 South Korean documentary-style crime drama film directed by Park Sun-woo. The story is based upon a real-life incident of a kidnapping in South Korea in 1986. The film stars Choi Min-sik, Kim Yun-jin, Choi Moo-sung and Lee Ki-young.

Plot

The film follows a carefully planned abduction case and the attempt to capture the criminals, which was originally witnessed by a father visiting the grave of his son who had died six days earlier. After the father gives his account of the incident to the authorities, a task-force is formed to scour the city for the criminals responsible. As the days pass and the criminals remain at large, everyone begins to worry and the task-force struggles to track the perpetrators down while the victim’s family waits desperately for the safe return of their loved one.

Cast

The film features an impressive cast led by Choi Min-sik, who plays Jang-jo, the father of the kidnapped child. Kim Yun-jin as Yeon-jeong, the child’s frantic mother, also does an excellent job bringing a sense of desperation and hopelessness to her role. Choi Moo-sung and Lee Ki-young portray the two detectives on the case, and their characters bring a sense of humanity and identification to the audience.

Reception

Voice of a Murderer was released to critical acclaim, winning numerous awards including the Grand Bell Award in South Korea, the Asia Pacific View Award at the Tokyo International Film Festival and the Film of Merit at the Hong Kong International Film Festival. The film’s success led to a sequel, titled New Word: Voice of a Murderer, which was released in 2015.
